چکیده

We investigate the limits of ground-based astrometry with adaptive optics using the core of the Galactic globular cluster M5. Adaptive optics systems provide near diffraction-limit imaging with the world’s largest telescopes. The substantial improvement in both resolution and signal-to-noise ratio enables high-precision astrometry from the ground. We describe the dominant systematic errors that typically limit ground-based differential astrometry, and enumerate observational considerations for mitigating their effects. After implementing these measures, we find that the dominant limitation on astrometric performance in this experiment is caused by tilt anisoplanatism. We then present an optimal estimation technique for measuring the position of one star relative to a grid of reference stars in the face of this correlated random noise source. Our methodology has the advantage of reducing the astrometric errors to ∼1/√t and faster than the square root of the number of reference stars, effectively eliminating noise caused by atmospheric tilt to the point that astrometric performance is limited by centering accuracy. Using 50 reference stars, we demonstrate a single-epoch astrometric precision of ≈1 mas in 1 s, decreasing to 100μas in 2 minutes of integration time at the Hale 200 inch telescope. We also show that our astrometry is accurate to 100μas for observations separated by 2 months. Finally, we discuss the limits and potential of differential astrometry with current and next-generation large-aperture telescopes. At this level of accuracy, numerous astrometric applications become accessible, including planet detection, astrometric microlensing signatures, and kinematics of distant Galactic stellar populations.

Impact of the Atmospheric Refraction on the Precise Astrometry with Adaptive Optics in Infrared

Context. We study the impact of the atmospheric differential chromatic refraction on the measurements and precision of relative astrometry. Specifically, we address the problem of measuring the separations of close pairs of binary stars with adaptive optics in the J and K bands. Aims. We investigate the influence of weather conditions, zenithal distance, star’s spectral type and observing wavel...

Precision astrometry of a sample of speckle binaries and multiples with the adaptive optics facilities at the Hale and Keck II telescopes

Using the adaptive optics facilities at the 200-in Hale and 10-m Keck II, we observed in the near-infrared a sample of 12 binary and multiple stars and one open cluster. We used the near diffraction limited images of these systems to measure the relative separations and position angles between their components. In this paper, we investigate and correct for the influence of the differential chro...

The Anisoplanatic Point-Spread Function in Adaptive Optics

The effects of anisoplanatism on the adaptive optics point-spread function are investigated. A model is derived that combines observations of the guide star with an analytic formulation of anisoplanatism in order to generate predictions for the adaptive optics point-spread function at arbitrary locations within the field of view. The analytic formulation captures the dependencies of anisoplanat...

Accurate Astrometry and Photometry of Saturated and Coronagraphic Point Spread Functions

Accurate astrometry and photometry of saturated and coronagraphic point spread functions (PSFs) are fundamental to both groundand space-based high contrast imaging projects. For ground-based adaptive optics imaging, differential atmospheric refraction and flexure introduce a small drift of the PSF with time, and seeing and sky transmission variations modify the PSF flux distribution. For space-...

The nearby eclipsing stellar system δ Velorum IV . Differential

Context. The stellar system δVel contains the brightest eclipsing binary in the southern sky (δVel A), and a nearby third star located ≈ 0.6′′ away (δVel B). The proximity of δVel B (usable as a reference) makes it a particularly well-suited target to detect the astrometric displacement of the center of light of the eclipsing pair. Aims. We obtained NACO astrometric observations with two goals:...
